Auditions - Grimm

Luke Harman

Luke is in his early 30's, and has a broad yet slim build.

This makes him look dominating, therefore perfect to be intimidating. Therefore, perfect for the role of Grimm.

However, he is just under six foot, therefore just a tad small to be Grimm.

He would be a great replacement if available.

Rupert Hollin

Rupert is in his forties.

He has a broad yet slim build. Therefore, an intimidating and big look yet very fit.

He is around six foot one and perfect to play Grimm.

He also has experience in acting in previous short films at university level.

With all this in mind, Rupert Hollin will be casted for Grimm.

His availability is very open too.

Jonathan Oslar

Jonathan is again perfect in terms of figure and intimidation of what Grimm would need.

He is around six foot two.

Jonathan would be another great replacement, however, his availability is not as good as Ruperts and does not have the experience in acting.

Hence the reasons stated above, is why Rupert will be casted.

Auditions - Zola 'Mils' Grace

Jade Moon

 This is our first auditioner for the main role. She has experience in Drama from year 7 to year 9.

She isn't to keen, but more than willing to help if needed.

Jade is perfect height for this character. However, does not fulfil all the characteristics we looked for in Zola.

She will be next in line if our character is unavailable for any reason but will not initially be given the role of Zola.

Mili Lewis

 Mili is 15 years of age and perfect age to play Zola, due to looking between 15-17 years old.

She has experience in drama, and did extra-curricular performing arts.

Mili is comfortable on stage, shown in her audition.

Zola characteristics shined in her audition and Mili possesses the looks and features we imagine Zola to look like.

With this, she is also available pretty much when we need.

Mili is also my sister, therefore lives with me to, so I am able to transfer Mili to and from the location we are filming.

With this, Mili has been given the role of Zola Grace.

Lauren Oslar

 Lauren hasn't got any experience in drama or acting.

Although her audition was excellent, she just didn't seem as natural as Mili did in her audition, therefore it would seem more realistic as Mili playing Zoa.

She was a little to tall for what we had in mind too.

Her availability was excellent though, and was very keen, therefore if needed, she would be a perfect replacement if anything went wrong.

Applying Audience Theories

Stuart Hall - Encoding & Decoding

The video below is a short film called 'Middle Passage'.

This short film dominant reading is that innocent people in African countries need our help when they immigrate or want to immigrate to our countries. This is because they have used sympathy to show they are innocent, making us believe they was in war zones and had poor living conditions etc. Therefore, the institution have tried to reach out to us as an audience to care for these immigrants and to discriminate them.

Otherwise, the negotiated reading for this text would be that they shouldn't have the same rights and allowed to immigrate to our country as it is against our laws. Even though they are only doing what's in their best interest and what we would most likely do, it is not fair if they are allowed but then harsh and a horrible act if we do not try to help them create a better lives.

Lastly, the oppositional reading would be that they shouldn't be allowed to immigrate false stop. We earnt our jobs and living and it is not fair if they come take our homes and jobs. They should just return to their country and leave ours alone instead of getting us involved.

Blumer & Katz - Uses & Gratification theory.

The short film below is called 'Globosome'.

This short film can be analysed by the uses and gratification theory by Blumer & Katz. In this short film the audience can use the text for escapism. This is because it is an animation meaning it escapes from the real world, therefore the audience will not feel any stress or feel any bad things in current life due to it not relating or anything to trigger them thoughts. Other ways the audience could use this text is through diversion due to it diverting from real life. This text cannot be used through comparing or counter cultural experience due to being an animation.

Audience Theories

STUART HALL - encoding & decoding theory
He said that the text is received from the audience, which then is decoded and then interpreted in the way they want to.
There are three different readings:

• Dominant Reading - this is when the media text is interpreted as the institution intended.
• Negotiated Reading - where the audience may agree with some parts of the media text, however disagree with other parts.
• Oppositional Reading - the audience find themselves in conflict with the text and disagrees.

BLUMER & KATZ - uses & gratifications theory

Blumer and Katz theorised audiences are active and that actually the audience uses the text rather than the text using the audience.

Examples of the ways the audience uses the text:

• Escapism

• Diversion

• Information

• Counter cultural experience

• Comparing

• Sexual Stimulation

Panic Attack Short Film - Two Step Flow Theory

Panic Attack is a science fiction short film, directed by the independent Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez. The short film was made in 2009 and the plot of the film was giant robots appearing out of the mist and attack Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Accompanied by a squadron of spacecraft, they fire weapons at the city and destroy key buildings, leading to mass panic. The military fights back to little avail. At the end of the film, the robots fuse together to form a giant sphere, which then detonates and engulfs the city in a fireball. No explanation is given for the attack.

• There was a trailer uploaded in 2006 onto YouTube, including some scenes from the finished version.
• The budget of the film was $300.
• Fede Alvarez wrote, edited, directed and created the CGI visual effects himself.

Release

• Premiered on 31 October, 2009. At the Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre Film Festival.
• Uploaded on YouTube on 3 November, 2009.

Two Step Flow Applied:

Applying Panic Attack to the theory of the two-step flow, Fede Alvarez success was greatly influenced by this. The opinion leader for this short film was Kanye West.

Applying This To My Future Actions:

From this, I will distribute my short film online, on means such as YouTube, because without this, there wouldn't be the possibility of the two-step flow to occur.

This means that my film will gain a larger audience from this and is most effective in possibly gaining from two-step flow.

Results:

• Ghost House Pictures signed Fede Alvarez.
• Made fourth Evil Dead.
• Had $300 million budget to make Don't Breathe.
